I think you're right, if nothing is done to the gear to make it last
longer. But, I have a 46 year old HP oscilloscope that I got going
again after its first death.. and a 1975 IMSAI that I've restored and
should easily go another 14 years (to make 50), as well as a few other
machines I think will make it fine.
It really depends on what components were used in the machine to begin
with. Higher end old equipment like DEC and HP that aren't populated
with shitty electrolytic caps (as are, for instance, many of the early
Apple Macs), or even heavily populated with them at all, stand a far
better chance of longevity than do the consumer grade computers.
But, I think that keeping an Apple II/II+/IIe going for 50 years
should be easily possible, as well as the very earliest Macs.. Mac
128k, 512k, Plus. 100 years, though, is likely a different story.
