My mistake. I lost track of the file size in the smoke... ;-)
Silly me--I made the unfortunate assumption that the file "inside" the
gzipped file would _not_ be named (typed) .gz!
There seems to be a general notion in the non-PC world that a filename
is just a filename. Not so. The letters after the final "dot" are the type
of the file, and they are fiddled with or ignored at risk to correct function.
