It will if it _is_ a .gz file. Take a look at its attributes:
its size and its appearance in a text editor (like WordPad).
These will give you the clues as to the actual type of
the file. Many common file types have distinctive and
recognizable headers, so that a program can increase
the probability that it's working on what it expects. ;-)
