DSK files are images of 140KB 5.25" floppy disks. They are simply a dump of
the sectors that make up a disk with no header info. Universal images hold
extra info in a header, including whether the disk is locked, the volume
number for a DOS disk and sector ordering (DOS vs ProDOS). They can also
hold nibbilised data (like NIB images) and more than 140KB for 3.5" floppies
and hard drive images.
http://a2central.com/programming/resources/filetypes/ftn-e0.0130.html has a
full explanation of the Universal Disk Image format aka 2IMG.
