I have problems with my Apple II's about once every two years. I
found
a great fix. Problems include crashes while booting, not booting, and
corruption of data.
I take all the cards out and clean the gold plated contacts with
rubbing
alcohol and a cloth. Get all the black off and polish it a nice gold.
I take
out all socketed chips.
The focus card gets it's drive removed and reinserted.
I use a compressor to blow the slots out. Compressed air cans
work good too.
I then take out my can of electric contact cleaner. It is meant to
remove corrosion from motor brushes. I tested this a long time ago
and found it did not eat any plastic, enamel, or components.
I spray the slots, chip sockets, and motherboard with the cleaner. I
wipe the motherboard clean. I let it sit a few minutes and use a
compressor to blow
it dry.
Stick all the chips and cards back in, and I won't have problems for
another
few years
Some cards may work fine in a slot and not others due to dust and
corrosion.
This makes some of the pins not contact correctly. Different cards
use
different pins so some may work in a slot with certain dirty pins.
I'll look in the garage and post the brand name of the cleaner I use.
It works great.
