The genuine Apple LocalTalk drop boxes I've seen have the termination
resistors inside the case, with an automatic mechanism to connect or
disconnect them depending on whether anything is plugged into the
corresponding Mini-Din-3 connector.  Maybe they switched to a cheaper
mechanism later.

Yes.  As I've noted elsewhere in this thread, you need a IIgs to set up
the server correctly, but once you've done this, any IIgs on the network
will be able to boot from the server.  This was most useful in classroom
settings: one fully configured IIgs can be used to set up the server,
and the rest of the classroom doesn't need floppy drives.

AppleShare 2 and 3 include support for Apple II network booting.  This
support was removed in AppleShare 4.
