Hello All,
I have news of a successfully hack to repair a Kensington System Saver
IIgs: I picked one up at the "Apple II Rescue" in Brown Dear, WI ~10
days ago. I did not test it on site, and when I got home I discovered
that the fan was dyeing. I took a while to start up and when it got up
to speed, it would wobble and make a horrific sound.
Last night my wife and I stopped by the local Goodwill store. There I
found a Kensington System Saver for the regular Apple II (side mount
unit). On a hunch I thought, "ya know, I bet they used the same fans
type in each unit. The fans (by memory) look to be the same size." So
I plugged the thing in at the store and tested it. Nice, strong air
flow and very quite. So I bought it.
When I got home I basically destroyed the Apple II system saver with a
dremmel (the fan was molded into the chassis). I opened up the IIgs
system saver. Unfortunately to do that, I had to remove part of the
foam gasket at the bottom. The fan in this unit was attached with two
large bolts. The new fan fit perfectly into the IIgs chassis, and the
bolts from the old fan worked great with the new fan.
So, if any of you out there have a dyeing system saver IIgs, you can
replace the fan with one from a system saver II. I am not repsonsible
for accidents, do at your own risk, etc...
ps- In keeping with my .sig below, I did not use a soldering iron. I
used the plastic wing nut things to keep the wires attached to each
other and insulated. But I did consider using my soldering iron.... :)

The three most dangerous things are a programmer with a soldering
iron, a manager who codes, and a user who gets ideas.
