To use the Apple II Workstation Card, you will need the software that
was supplied with it.  The key parts of this are:

- The file ATINIT (which links the file server access support into
ProDOS and provides a place for configuration options to be stored).
Note that there are at least four different variants of ATINIT; you need
the one for the workstation card, not one of the various ones that works
with an Apple IIgs.

- The CHOOSER.II program, which lets you select a network printer, or
set the card to operate with a directly connected printer.  It also
downloads an ImageWriter emulator to a laser printer.

- The LOGON and LOGOFF programs, which are used to control file server
connections.

- The NAMER.II program, which lets you assign a name to a networked
printer.  (You wouldn't need this unless you had more than one network
printer of the same type.)

The only network printers supported by the workstation card are the
ImageWriter II or LQ with an AppleTalk card installed, or a LaserWriter
(or closely compatible laser printer).  For a direct connect printer,
you should be able to use any serial printer as long as your application
supports it.

The workstation card might default to providing access to a directly
connected printer if you don't have the support software, but I've never
tried this.  I don't recall offhand whether it can use port 1 (the top
connector) for a directly connected printer, as that is normally the
network connection.  The second (bottom) port can only be used with a
directly connected printer.
