Just a guess, but you did not say that you are using a null modem cable.
A normal 9 to 25 pine serial cable will not work. You may be able to get
a null modem adapter to fit on either the 9 pin or 25 pin end to fix
this, or try for a null modem cable with the right size ends (more
likely, one with 9 to 9 or 25 to 25 plus a 9-25 or 25-9 adapter).
