The VGC chip only needed replacing if you were experiencing a pink
fringing effect on 80 column text or in double-hi-res graphics.  When
I upgraded my ROM 0 I only had to change the ROM chip and even then, I
had to do it myself in the Apple dealers back room because their
regular "tech" guy wasn't in that day.  :-)
