I probably should try it sometime, especially with all the Linux boxen I run
(most of 'em run SuSE 6.[34], though the firewall runs a homebrew Linux
config).  I ought to at least throw hello.c at it and see what I can get. 
Adding filesystem support would also be useful, and talking to ProDOS isn't
all that hard.

Sounds like the hard way to get the code into your II, given that comm
programs already exist (some of 'em, like Kermit, are even free).  I've had
ProTERM 3.0 for eons (probably 9 or 10 years now) and would recommend it or
a later version.
