Ok, it's been over two days of the iMac treating all CD Roms as ProDOS volumes.
 Someone wrote back that "ProDOS OK"  actually means "ProDOS zero K(ilobytes)."
 

I didn't do a thing to the computer and NOW it's running CDs just fine.  Is it
too far past Halloween to think that this iMac is cursed?  (Besides my own
cursing at it, of course.)
