Up until about four or five months ago I was using a 1.2GB hard drive
on my IIgs hooked up to a RamFAST Rev D SCSI card. Because the
RamFAST is limited to 12 active partitions at a time and because I
also have other drive that I sometimes use with my IIgs (the EZ135
drive being the most used) I decided not to use all 12 partitions for
the 1.2GB hard drive. Instead I formatted it with 7 32MB partitions
that I formatted as ProDOS and 1 aproximately 880MB partition that I
formatted as HFS. The HFS partition was only ever used to store
archives that I had on floppies that I was going to sort through. All
the programs and data files that I was dealing with regularly on my
IIgs all fit, with lots of room to spare, on the 7 ProDOS partitions.
Please note that I could have put 12 partitions on that drive and
still been able to access the partitions on an EZ135 cartridge by
disabling some of the hard drive partitions whenever I hooked up the
EZ135 drive. That just seemed like too much of a pain, though. :-)
Now I have a 540MB hard drive hooked up to that same RamFAST card but
I've set it up with 11 ProDOS partitions and 1 HFS partition. The
reason I did this was because I was having problems getting the CD-ROM
drive I got at KFest to work when connected on the same chain as the
hard drive so I took the easy way out and put an Apple High Speed SCSI
card in the same IIgs as that RamFAST and I hooked the CD-ROM drive up
to the AHS SCSI card. I decided that because the AHS card doesn't
suffer from the same 12 partition per drive limitation that the
RamFAST does, I'll use the AHS card for hooking up devices when
needed. This left me with the ability to make all 12 of the RamFAST's
active partitions come from the hard drive.
Once I get a few more SCSI cables I'll be able to throw any
combination of hard drives, CD-ROM drive, EZ135 drive, Jaz drive,
magneto-optical drives or SyQuest 44MB or 88MB drives onto my IIgs.
That would be a lot of storage online at once. Over 4GB in fact, from
10 drives that I know I have sitting here right now. :-)
