You can actually download the 7.5.5 update from Apple's site. That would
be the latest you can run for free.

And running them through ProType. It seems that the PC/File Exchange
system doesn't start having problems until 8.6, at least from what I've
been able to determine. I know it works right from 8.1 and always did
from 7.5.5. Of course, the easiest way to do it once you have GS/OS
system disks is to just set up an appletalk network and send the files
back and forth that way. Although an HD is highly recommended for
doing that.
