Re: Sick And Tired of SHK

OK, I did some playing around this evening.

Ruud, first of all, what version of MacOS are you using to try and
do all this?

And here's what I found out. I created an SHK file on Bernie ][ the
Rescue, then 'downloaded' it to my Mac. I added a resource fork to
the file. It has the correct filetype info at this time. Ran it
through ProType, resource fork wasn't removed. Changed filetype to
BINA, creator to ????, ran it through ProType, resource fork wasn't
removed. Changed filetype to TEXT, creator to ????, ran it through
ProType, resource fork WAS removed. Copied to a floppy on my PM7500
running MacOS 8.6 (with File Exchange 3.0.1 (formerly PC Exchange)).
A resource fork was added to the file.

Well, this wasn't right as I knew I had done this before, but that
was always on a Quadra 650 running lower versions of the OS, so went
to my Q650 which was set up as a server. Copied the resourceless
SHK file over to that machine. Inserted a ProDOS floppy. Copied
the file over (using PC Exchange 2.2), took floppy back to PM7500,
inserted floppy with Bernie running with ShrinkIt 3.4 running.

ShrinkIt 3.4 opened the file. Apparently they changed something
in the later versions of File Exchange that made it more problematic
with 8-bit ProDOS stuff.

So, to recap, had SHK file with no resource fork. Copied it to a
floppy under MacOS 8.6 (File Exchange 3.0.1), resource fork added
and filetype under ProDOS was $00. Copied it to a floppy under
MacOS 8.1 (PC Exchange 2.2) and no resource fork was added and the
correct filetype came up under ProDOS ($E0/$8002).

If you have any questions about this, ask and I'll play around more
and try to find out more information.
