Dumb Question: A2E-CDROM - Doable?

--> I've only peripherally noted Apple 2 and CD-ROM topics
    over the last couple of years and though I'm reasonably
    sure I already know the answer; the current announcements
    regarding (A2) Genie/Lamp CD-ROMS makes me wonder :

    Is it possible to hook-up a ProDOS-compatible CD-ROM drive
    to an Apple 2E? Or can this only be accomplished on an A2GS?
    I'd love to do this to my 2E, if it was `doable'. . .
