Yes, compressing them as JPEG files would be a good idea.  If they are
very high resolution, which seems likely based on the file sizes, it
might be a good idea to reduce the resolution as well.

I would avoid GIF format as that format only supports 256 colours.
Unless the originals have 256 colours or less, I wouldn't use this
format.  Personally, I only use this format for things like graphic
bullets, icons and animated banners and such in web pages.  It is also
good for line art and scanned text as the compression used doesn't
alter the image at all.

JPEG supports 16.7 million colours and gets better compression.  You
have to be careful with the compression level, though, as the
compression used does alter the image.  That is how it gets such good
compression levels.  It doesn't worry about accuracy in the image and
just gets something close.  If you turn up the compression too much,
the image quality starts to go down.

I hope this helps.  I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to
graphics but I'm sure someone could give you some information about
dots per inch to strive for in case people would like to print Glen's
pictures.
