If you can't locate an ISP that offers shell accounts (which are becoming
increasingly rare nowadays), set up a garage-sale 386 or 486 with Linux and
whatever kind of Internet access you want (dial-up, cable-modem, DSL, etc.).
Hang your II off one of the serial ports, run getty on that port...and make
your own shell account. Throw a NIC in there (a 2nd NIC if you're not using
dial-up) and you can share the connection among your other x86 boxen, Macs,
or whatever.
