pb formatting a HD

I have a Performa 5200 16/800 computer with a crashed hard disk.
- S.O.S Disk can't verify the disk.
- Hard Disk tool can't initialize or format the disk because of an error.
- After a long waiting time, Norton Disk Doctor tell me (in french) :
"Une erreur grave a �t� trouv�e dans la carte des descripteurs de pilotes.
Le nombre de pilotes est erron�. ..." which is something like "a severe
problem has been found in the driver descriptor card. The number of drivers
is wrong"
Is there a way (software, freeware that i don't have) to be able to reformat
this disk without having to bring it to the shop.
