( I am a little newish to all this .... )
Alltech sells the FOCUS internal IDE drives. They're great, but supply
may be backed up a little now and then. When I ordered the last one the
card-only kits weren't available, and the ones with the 60 meg drives were
just a little more anyway.
The drive is set up with a nice set of software for a IIgs. You place it
in slot 7 (if no AppleTalk), set the boot slot, and go.
SCSI cards are harder to come across, you can get them on ebay or hunt
around. SCSI is more versatile, but slower (least mine is) than a FOCUS. I
believe you need a modified REV A or REV C Apple SCSI, or a High Speed Apple
SCSI, or RAMFAST (fastest?) for the IIgs. There are other names but I don't
know about them. There are still a few old removables around on ebay also. I
have an old SyQuest 44 and it is a prefect size for one ProDos partition and
a 10 meg second partition. You can also format them with Mac HFS for a
larger size (but with fewer diagnostic IIgs tools I guess), and can take
these over to some Mac with a SyQuest and exchange data. Very nice. I have
heard about SCSI scanners and CD-ROM players but I don't know about 'em.
Another good thing to have is an accelerator. I am trying to stabilize a
Zip GSX and can see the benefits. You will do just fine with a stock IIgs,
but the speed is nice with the GUI and a few games. Sadly these are harder
to find than a SCSI card.
(I paid a lot for mine and I do not know if I will get it to work reliably.
(sure is fun trying though!) )
