That's odd. Earlier this year I got one of their improved '816 chips
from a group purchase. It was surely less than 50 pieces total. Perhaps
we cleaned them out.

Unfortunate. IIRC, WDC is a family buisness. It's likely that they only
have a few employees. Since most of their revenue is coming from the
embedded market their web presence is probably a low priority for them.

Aren't the SNES 65816 chips surface mounted to the board? Removing those
would be delicate work. I wouldn't want to build a prototype using parts
that I couldn't trust. Also, while it's known that the SNES uses a 65816
core I don't think anyone has verified that it's the vanilla chip. The
NES used a custom 6502, the gameboy a custom 8080. I would not be
surprised if Nintendo did something similar with the SNES.

Not I. If I were in immediate need of 65816 that's the first place I'd
look. It would be for a good cause. Speaking of which, I have DIP 65816
leftover from my accelerator upgrade. You're welcome to it.

The downside to using unique chips. :(
