     A pretty good way to trim away the socket is using a soldering pencil.
You melt and push aside the plastic near the bad pin until you find something
you can solder to-- probably, what's left of the broken off pin 40. Then, you
can use a knife to cut/scrape away enough plastic to get to exposed metal.

     A good pin to solder on can come from some socket with long pins (snip
one off).  Gold-plated pins are the easiest to solder.

     Be sure to use high quality solder (like 63 tin multicore).

     When you have the new pin soldered on, you can use a little epoxy to
help anchor it.
