how do you do a BASIC POKE?

WEll, is this a BASIC game?  I know in Eamon, a BASIC game, you do a control
reset then type in the command, then enter a command to resume (that I cannot
remember right now).  I am a terrible one to remember.
There are otehr games where if you do a control reset, you are dropped into the
monitor (you get a "*" prompt).  from there that poke command <might> work. 
But maybe now.  There is a way to return to your game from there too, but
again, I'm not sure.  type pf maybe.
