DVDs are manufactured differently...instead of putting the data layer on one
side of the disk (with a thin protective layer over it), the data layer gets
sandwiched between two disks.  (Look at the edge of a DVD...you'll see a
seam running around the disk in the middle of the edge.)  This difference in
the manufacturing process is what made double-sided DVDs possible (stick the
two data layers together, facing away from each other, and proceed as
usual).
