You must be pretty rough on your CDs if they're only good for about a year. 
I got my first CD player in late 1993; the CDs I got with it at the time are
still in like-new condition.  Treat them well and they should last a good
long time.  (You didn't scratch the needle across your LPs, did you?  Treat
your CDs the same way you used to treat your records (unless they're AOL
CD-ROMs, in which case I'd say they'll give a very nice light show in your
microwave :-) ).)

That sounds like a design flaw in the player.  If you're running into
frequent problems, consider copying CDs you play frequently to CD-R.  When
the copy craps out, make a new one.

The better approach would be to either (1) get a better CD player or (2)
lose the CD player altogether and go back to cassettes (you're not going to
hear the full dynamic range of a CD in a moving car anyway).
