Error $0046 is "File not found". I expect this means that it can't find
a file called BOOT.DRIVER. I haven't seen an AppleShare installation
for quite a while, so I don't remember specifics about the files.

I doubt this would be the cause.

In that case it definitely isn't anything to do with memory. Booting
over a network into ProDOS-8 should be possible in a 512K ROM 1 IIgs, so
a ROM 3 would be fine.
Did you install the Apple II Setup disk that comes with IIgs System
6.0.1?

One extra point occurs to me: what is the name of the hard drive on the
Macintosh? If you want to be able to access the server from ProDOS-8,
the server's hard drive must use a ProDOS compatible filename, i.e.
letters, digits and periods only, no more than 15 characters, and the
name must start with a letter.
In some configurations you can avoid this restriction by using a shared
folder on the hard drive (which has an appropriate ProDOS compatible
name) instead of sharing the entire drive, but I don't know if this is
possible with an AppleShare server, particularly with Apple II boot
support enabled.
