Changing ProDOS's (BASIC.SYSTEM's?) File Type Mneumonics

How do I change the ProDOS file type mneumonics? Are they stored in
BASIC.SYSTEM, or in the PRODOS file itself? I know this will take some
file editing.

If I want to assign a mneumonic to a file type that doesn't have one, say,
$77, could I find a "$77" in the file and replace that? Or would that
require more advanced editing?

On a side note, where can I find a newsgroup filter for NewsWatcher on
MacOS 7.6?
