There is nothing in the kernel that has 'em, nor any code that can even
display a directory for that matter. Every SYS program has to do that on
its own. They can display any three letter type for any hex file type,
but all apps are expected to follow established conventions for obvious
reasons.

Depends on how the file type table is laid out in BASIC. I've never wanted
to change any of the standard three letter types myself so I've never tried
to figure it out. You could search the BASIC.SYSTEM file or look in memory
when BASIC is running and see the format. Doubt it's made to be extensible
though since there are user defined file types, $F0-F8.
