The author of Minix is Andrew Tanenbaum, and he recently put Minix under
the BSD license. The full source code is available by FTP; see the
comp.os.minix FAQ for more information.
Another mini-UNIX, Douglas Comer's XINU, was ported to the 8-bit Apple II
by Warren Toomey many years ago. I believe you can still download the
source code from his FTP site, minnie.cs.adfa.oz.au. As it was a personal
project, documentation is sparse. His Apple II was actually a clone with
some peculiar characteristics, which adds to the difficulty.
