Max, everyone recognizes the work that Howard has done. That is a given, and
nobody disputes that. In fact, it's a relief to have someone else do the
legwork, so we ("we" = all interested others) can supply the latest and last
versions of the Beagle Bros products to our members.
However, it is a fact that most Beagle Bros programmers feel that when they are
releasing their products, they are releasing them to everyone. That release is
not limited to one individual or group. In fact, Randy Brant's announcement was
first placed in the Apple II Mail group (by Randy himself) months before anyone
else ever mentioned it. Same for Deja ][.
Furthermore, the Lost Classics release notice contains limiations on future
distrubution of the products containing changes. I took this to mean than
updated versions (such as AppleWorks 5.1 versions and Y2K-compliant versions)
could not be relased. I contacted Beagle Bros and they said this was not true
at all. They placed no such limitation of their releases - this is not their
wording at all.
I am told that the limits in the freeware notice are a holdover from past Lost
Classics releases. It is an unfortunate one.
We (The Apple II Mail Group) have permission to upload any newer versions of
the Beagle Bros products, independent of any freeware notice other than a
copyright ownership statement. I do not know if Mr. Turley has the same
privelege, but I would think that it would extend to anyone who can supply the
needed wares.
I hate to see a controversy rise over our favorite Apple II software products.
It is a disservice, especially Beagle Bros. Good luck and continued success
with the Lost Classics project, but the Apple II is for everyone, and once
something's free, it's free.
