It sure sounds like a cap to me.  If you are familliar with electronics, look for a
blown capacitor.  A blown cap will have a slightly raised top (instead of flat) and
may be leaking/oozing it's electrolite.  Replace any caps that you find fit this
description with an adaquately rated replacement.  Make sure to note polarity when
replacing it.  Of course if it is a disk capacitor, it would show discoloration and
probably a crack.  Look for bad caps especially where you see heat discoloration.
