Re: AppleWorks GS

Your post is right on the mark about this issue. Copyright
law is indeed quite clear. Those old software even if no
longer sold are still protected and cannot legally be copied.
The people who advocate ignoring the law point out that
nobody cares anymore if no one is going to make a profit
from the product anymore and that too is true (at least from
a legal standpoint where the owner will drag the accused
into court and sue). But just because one can do it with
impunity does not mean it is legal. Copying the software
is still an illegal activity. Just like you can drive above the
speed limit when nobody is looking or even a little bit above
the speed limit when a cop is around and not noticing, but
you are still breaking the law.

So this makes you wonder why some people on csa2
behave the way they do. Why do they keep trying to claim
that copying the said software is LEGAL? Why not
simply state what is the truth. The activity is illegal but
the owner is not going to take the offenders to court? Why
do they keep coming up with lame explanations of the
supposed legality of copying this software?

The fact that you post a clear, logical, and sane followup
means that you are a relatively new csa2 reader. Other
new readers have reacted the same way. I use to be the
same way. But now I just ignore these arguments. Do
you know why?

The reason why those who copy the software or make it
available do not state the obvious (it is illegal but nobody
is going to take any action against them) and rather try
to fabricate a convoluted explanation/excuse for its
supposed legality is simple. They do it for fun. Some
people just like to see flame wars on csa2.

When I realized this, I stopped responding to these posts.
I would advise that any sane individual do the same.

Kids at play, folks. Some people here are probably out
laughing whenever they can get a flame war going.

P.S. Watch what will happen here. I'm posting this ONLY
to warn you about the motivation of these people and yet
the first paragraph of my followup will be quoted out of
context and used as a counterpoint to yet another long
and illogical explanation of how copying this software is
legal. Like I said, kids at play.
