Apple sold an upgrade kit for $500 during the ROM 0/01 era. It had the board,
a new metal bottom, and new labels to say Apple IIgs on the lid. Hopefully
you didn't get your pocket picked by some crook on epay calling it a rare
Apple prototype or somesuch.

Early //e's like my Aug '83 vintage wouldn't work with the upgrade since
they had the old ][/][ plus style case with the sprayed on finish. It was
meant for the newer plastic kind, so the screw holes weren't the same. So
Apple's fix was to sell a new case top to people in that boat. I happen to
have one of those new in box in my stash. I could use it to build a beige
//e that looks like it just came out of the box for the first time. Now it
is a bit scarce.
