    What killed the Apple /// was the Apple ///.  It got such a bad reputation
(well deserved) at the time for flaking out and not working all the time. 
Apple admittedly had socket problems with the board, and one service paper said
to pick the front of the machine up a few inches, and allow it to drop back
down to help reseat the chips. That and proper cooling would have helped.

   Had the Apple /// been designed as well as the ///+ from the start, it would
have sold a whole lot better, and lasted longer.  The Apple ///+ was a vast
improvement, but it was way too late to fend off the earlier problems.  I still
have 6-8 brand new ///+ motherboards laying around.
