Re: Ultima I for IIGS
Hi,
Good question Phoenyx as I was wondering too. i don't have a GS but I'm
curious to see what happens with Ultima. Ultima 9: Ascension was released
and is apparently the final chapter of the Ultima saga as we know it.
So now is a good time to see who actually owns Ultima's copyrights. My
take on it:
I would think Richard Garriot would still own the "rights" to the Ultima
name because it's worth a lot of money. EA may have the rights (just as
Vitesse had with Ultima I for the IIGS) to sell programs with the Ultima
name but Garriot would own the "name". That's just my opinion and may not
reflect the truth.
This brings up an interesting question: As Burger Bill programmed
Ultima I for the IIGS does he get final say if Ultima I goes for sale or
public domain if he wished? I'm no expert on copyright law so I have no
idea. That's basically been the discussion here. Does Richard Garriot
have any say over it?
Another thing I'm sure others are wondering about: How about getting
all the Ultima games released to the public domain (for the 8 bit
A2's)? Is that possible but to still allow the PC version's to sell?
Again, I'm just curious. As I played Ultima III, IV and V, it's not a
big deal to me. But others who have no ready access to Ultima may like to
see this happen
