They're mechanically equivalent to the normal Disk II drives - with
the added bonus that formatting a disk with them will complain if
they're far out of whack, slow or fast.  The schematics are available
on Asimov and apple3.org.  There are a few extra signals that aid in
the daisy-chaining up to three more drives off the back of the
internal one.  Is there a particular problem you're trying to solve?

In fact, they are completely equivalent, with the sole exception
being the drive select daisy-chaining.

For years I used a select-modified Disk /// on my ][+ system with
a Disk ][ Controller.
