They're mechanically equivalent to the normal Disk II drives - with
the added bonus that formatting a disk with them will complain if
they're far out of whack, slow or fast.  The schematics are available
on Asimov and apple3.org.  There are a few extra signals that aid in
the daisy-chaining up to three more drives off the back of the
internal one.  Is there a particular problem you're trying to solve?
Yes, chronic read errors. I was originally thinking alignment, but my general impression is that mechanical misalignment of the head is very unlikely unless played with (I have not done so). 

Dirty head, off speed or uneven speed, noise in read signal (cable
or electronics).  I agree that head alignment is low on the list.
