It would have been longer than a few months...Apple still had a couple of
billion dollars in the bank. Most of the people I know won't use Microsoft
products on their Mac...how did that help MS bail out Apple????

Also the lawsuit was pretty much over in Apple's favor...there was mostly
just the final judgement and the settlement left to figure out. Jobs
just figured that it would be better business to play nice with MS and
it was a good deal for MS.

What bailed out Apple was them cleaning up their product line and coming
out with machines that people wanted to buy. They went from several
product lines all with different motherboards to a streamlined 4 product
lines all with a similar motherboard architecture. This allowed them
to lower productions costs, which lowered retail costs and allowed
everything to be streamlined...of course this can hurt when something
goes wrong with a production line (Tiawanese earthquake shutting down
production with nothing in the warehouses.)
