Changes like the ones you describe and iMac have made a big difference.
In the months preceding the Microsoft agreement, the question was whether
Apple would be around long enough to make such adjustments and reap the
benefits if they worked. Obtaining Microsoft's blessing eliminated any doubt.
What saved Apple was industry-wide confidence (which, in turn,
translated to consumer confidence) that the company was on its way back. The
basis for this confidence was the Microsoft deal. Without it, Apple was
headed for the big dumpster in the sky.
