I have had similar symptoms in a couple of different Apple dot matrix
printers. Here is what I found:  The polished guide bar on which the print
head slides gets very dirty over time.  The grinding sound is that of the
belts slipping because there is so much friction on the guide bar.  I took a
bit of solvent and wiped the bar clean and then re-lubricated it.  Works
fine!
