Having the docs definitely helps. It turns out that Wizardry IV (Return
of Werdna) introduces a few new wrinkles. One is that the adventure is
self-contained-- there's no need to generate characters in the Proving Grounds
or bring them in from a previous Wizardry. Another change is permitting Game
Saves at any time.
To save a game you Quit and select one of 8 slots to save your game on
Scenario Diskette A.

In some ways, Ken may be better off doing a save state-- at least in
terms of a save working like a traditional Game Save. According to the manual,
when you do a Game Save you are taking a break to 'look at the big picture'
and resting up for your next continuation of the quest.
Since you get a rest, so do the guardians and adventurers who oppose you.
(The manual says they are "revitalized", which sounds like bad news!)
Evidently, it's best to avoid frivolous Game Saves.
