There is a quick way to test to see how much of a problem it is. Put
him into Applesoft and write a quick program to fire a few lines of text
to the printer. As I recall initialization of the card for text mode
would be either <Ctrl-I>80N or <Ctrl-I>0N. This will test it with 7 bit
ascii. There is a switch to allow the 8'th bit to be sent to the printer
(this should be on if he is using TTFonts or graphics of any sort).
Still can't find my manual otherwise I'd scan a copy for you.
If it fails in text mode you sure aren't going to get graphics out of
it.
