eBay provides services for buyers and sellers that both are willing to pay
for. They deliver a huge audience to the seller, and those benefits are
obvious. The buyer gets convenience and some measure of confidence in the
transaction, but is also assured that s/he is paying the actual market value
for the item, for that market at that time. If someone offers a Super Serial
Card for "best offer" on csa2.marketplace, and I offer $100 for it and the
next higher offer is $5, you can believe that I'm going to have to pay the
full $100 for it. On eBay, though, it'll cost me $5.25. There, it takes at
least two people to create a "frenzy," and you just have to be careful not to
bid more for something than it's worth to you. Different people value the
same amount of money differently. You still have to be careful of shill bids
and other cons, but it's better than some of the alternatives.
