The partitioning on the Mac wasn't necessary. Installing Apple's SCSI 
drivers on the drive was. But you can do this with Advanced Disk Utility 
on the IIGS if you have the right files in the correct location. I know 
this worked for me going between IIGS and Macs.

And there were OS 9 and earlier utilities that would mount the drive 
without having to install those drivers.
