John: I had a similar problem: no Mac (I'm really a PC kinda guy) so I went to 
Goodwill and bought a IIsi for around 10 bucks!  It took a little doing and a 
LOT of swearing but I now have it setup as a server for my //e and my GS.
The point is: go to your local thrift stores.  Many things show up they do 
they do...(today I got a ROM 3 for an embarassingly small amount).....
