With my paid account I have been in chat using a variety of telnet
programs without any problems including Spectrum v2.2 (GS/OS),
TTermPro (Win95), telnet (Linux).

I've also tried out the web based chat using Netscape but I don't
think I've ever tried it with Internet Explorer.

I think there is some Java problems with certain browsers or certain
versions of browsers but I can't remember the details as I don't use
the web based chat if I can avoid it.
