The big thing that bothered me about HTML when I first learned it was
tags like <STRONG> and <CITE>. There was no way to specify things
like bold, italic, underline and such. They have since added those
commands so I use them now. Also, to this day there is no way to
specify left or right margins or justify the document. The closest
you can get is if you put your entire page into a table which is
exactly what I do for the A2Pro web pages on Delphi.
As to an HTML interpreter for the Apple II, what exactly are you
looking for and for what model(s) of Apple II? Are you wanting
something to just display pages or do you want something that allows
you to click on links and/or fill in forms?
Spectrum Internet Suite (aka SIS) is a web browser written as a set of
scripts for Spectrum. Spectrum and WebWorksGS can both display an
HTML page the same way SIS does (they use the same HTML rendering
engine).
If you are looking for something that will work on all Apple IIs and
only display on a text screen, it should be relatively easy to do as
there are a lot of HTML tags you would be ignoring in this case.
By the way, what type of information are you dealing with that doesn't
work well with traditional databases? You might just need to switch
to a relational database system to handle your data better.
