While there are good reasons to want a VGA solution, the best results with
the least fiddling will always be converting 15kHz RGB to 15kHz YCrCb
(component video). 

This is purely a real-time (no storage) analog (video opamps) solution.  It
has been published at least once, and should, with today's ICs, be both
cheap and low-powered. 

I'm surprised that video gamers haven't made it more popular.
