These are the accepted standards for the Apple II series, but by no
means are they set in stone.

If you want the Apple to boot the disk controller on start-up, put it
in slot 7 or 6. The Apple scans the slots starting at slot seven and
works it's way down.

The super serial card is usually in slot 1 or 2 depending on it's
intended function. For printing, most software is designed for
slot 1. For communication, i.e. modems, most software is set
to use slot 2.

It is generally a good thing to follow the accepted standards
since many software programs didn't offer options to change
or were difficult to change the settings.
