     Definitely, Persistence conquers many problems.

ADT requires a 'NULL modem cable'-- e.g. a NULL modem connector which
joins a modem cable from the Apple II and a modem cable from the PC.

ADT also requires an Apple II Super Serial Card (SSC) or a card or serial
port which is SSC compatible. This is because the Apple II ADT program expects
to communicate with the specific kind of Serial Controller IC found on an SSC.
I do not know what kind of serial controller may be included in your Franklin
1200. (If it's the Franklin Ace Dual I/O card, it probably uses a 2561 Serial
Controller. The SSC uses a 6551.)

Unless you change ADT settings, the Apple II ADT program will expect to
access the Serial Controller IC in Slot 2.

The PC ADT program needs to run under DOS (not a Win95 DOS window).

Your baud rate setting needs to be the same for both ADT programs (i.e. on
the Apple II and on the PC). Try starting at 2400 baud.

A quickie check that you have a good connection is to use ADT's Dir
command (from the Apple II).

When transferring .dsk files from the PC, the target diskette (on the
Apple II) must be DOS 3.3 formatted. A diskette that you have INITed under DOS
3.3 is fine. (Example: Boot a DOS 3.3 diskette; get to the usual BASIC prompt;
stick in the diskette to INIT; enter INIT HELLO.)

If your Franklin can not use ADT, a good telecom program to request via
snail mail is Modem MGR. Modem MGR supports a wide range of Serial Controller
IC's (including the 2561). Ask for both the DOS 3.3 and ProDOS versions.

Regarding your troublesome disk drives, once they are cleaned you may be
able to improve performance with a Speed adjustment. For info about adjusting
Speed, see http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2FDRIVE.html#003 .
